Website Cookie Changes for 2024

WHAT ARE INTERNET COOKIES?

Internet cookies are tiny files of data used to track your online activities and information when you’re browsing a website. That collected data is then stored in your browser.

WHY ARE COOKIES IMPORTANT?

The main purpose of cookies is to collect important user and behavioural data to help personalise a visitor’s experience as well as enable developers to improve website browsing.

COOKIE DEVELOPMENTS IN A NUTSHELL…

GDPR has significantly impacted the way website cookies are used and managed. With its emphasis on data privacy and user consent, GDPR has brought about a shift in how websites collect and store information through cookies.

Owners of websites now have to ensure that they obtain explicit consent from users before setting cookies that track their online activities.

Almost all websites you visit these days will display a pop-up notification when first visited to provide you with consent choices and preferences.

WHAT IS CHANGING?

Third-party cookies are created by domains other than the one the user is visiting, allowing for cross-site tracking and personalised advertisements. Many websites are now transitioning away from third-party cookies towards more privacy-friendly alternatives.

This shift has significant implications for website owners who rely on targeted advertising to help monetise or attract more custom to their platforms. Without access to third-party data, advertisers may struggle to reach their desired audiences effectively.

In response to this challenge, Google have introduced new solutions like Consent Mode v2 to help website owners navigate the evolving landscape of online privacy. By giving users more control over their data and consent preferences, these tools aim to strike a balance between personalisation and privacy protection.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR WEBSITE?

Most of the changes are happening behind the scenes, however design4dentists will be making some adjustments to your cookie consent banners. These will become larger and more obvious and will include a new “REJECT” button, allowing users to opt out of all unnecessary cookies.

This process will be carried out in two stages. First we will apply the new compliant configuration, and then we will customise the banner to appear more in tune with your website colouration and branding.

YOUR SEO AND ADVERTISING REPORTS

Unfortunately the introduction of a “REJECT” button will have an impact on website statistics. Any user that clicks “REJECT” will not have there data recorded which will result in a significant drop in traffic, events and conversions.
